The 533 km Nacala-Cuamba railway line was completely rehabilitated during the war and received funding of US$254 million, supported by France, Portugal and the European Union.

The project was also financed in local currency through a 20 billion meticais contribution from the State Budget, the Bank of Mozambique, and CFM. The line's superstructure is modern in design and in good condition.
